Chapter 42 Test Hints

Know my three powerpoint lectures really well.

Read the Cliffs Note book on both the Respiratory System and Circulatory System. These are excellent summaries of what you need to know. Anything in these sections is fair game!

Read the section on pages 827 & 828 about gills. Pay particular attention to the amount of oxygen in water (compared with the amount in air), the diversity of gills in different animals (see figure 42.18) and how organisms maximize the oxygen extracted from water.

Examine figure 42.15 in your book. Know the name of the final protein molecule that is responsible for the clotting of blood.

Know how to calculate the partial pressure of oxygen (see my powerpoint slides on this).

Pay particular attention to figure 42.10. Be able to correlate surface area, blood velocity, blood pressure along the entire length of the circulatory system.

Read about “Carbon Dioxide Transport” on page 835-836. Know in what form and how carbon dioxide is carried from the tissues back to the lungs. Hint: all the carbon dioxide does not just connect to hemoglobin like oxygen- it’s a little trickier than that. . .(Know the basics, not all the messy details). This is well done in the Cliffs Note book.

I reserve the right to ask you any one of the three free response questions,
