1. Know the difference between the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS)

 

2. The simplest view of the nervous system is the knee-jerk reflex. Be able to explain it.

 

3. Know your neuron and all these parts (and their function): cell body, dendrites, axon hillock, axon, synaptic terminal, myelin sheath, Schwann cells, nodes of Ranvier.

 

4. Be able to explain what the resting potential is and how it is established.

 

5. Know what a graded potential is and the difference between hyperpolarization and deplorization.

 

6. Be able to tell the basic difference between a graded potential and an action potential.

 

7. Describe, in detail, the steps, how the action potential is formed. Be able to show and describe the oscilloscope view (the graphs in the lecture) and the view of what is going on in the membrane.
