Dr. DeArmond, an internationally recognized expert on prions who has worked with Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Stanley Pruisner at UCSF, gave a fascinating talk on the infectious proteins known as prions. His talk entitled, "Prions: Invaders from Inner Space," gave us a great overview of the biology of these fascinating molecules which are responsible for such fatal brain diseases such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans, and Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) or Mad Cow Disease in cattle.
